We purchased Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter so our reviewer (and her cat, Mila) could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.
There are tons of cat litter options on the market and each claims to make your litter box a little more bearable. Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter promises a dust-free, highly clumpable, odor-controlling formula that won’t track, but how do these pledges pan out? With the help of our 4-year-old cat Mila, we tested the litter in our home. Read on for our full review.
Odor Elimination: Works as promised
Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter has no scent, which we prefer over heavily perfumed cat litter. In our experience, scented cat litters don’t mask bad smells as much as they become the offending odor. Plus, we were interested to see whether the scent-free litter would be able to keep litter box smells contained.
Thankfully, this litter absolutely does. Dr. Elsey’s litter seemed to suck up bad scents as soon as they appeared, as our home was left odor free. Even after a week, a sniff of the room our litter box is in smelled like nothing—no fragrance, no cat urine, nothing—which is exactly how we like it.
Clumping Ability: Easily scoopable
Dr. Elsey's litter is made out of a clay material that is supposed to clump well while preventing moisture from reaching the bottom of the litter box. We think it does a fairly good job of living up to this claim. Though our kitty favors one corner of her litter box, urine clumped into individual rocks that were easy to scoop, unlike some litters that end up clumping into one big mass. When it came time to scoop, these clumps broke apart slightly but it was still manageable and easy to clean out.

Ease of Use: A very heavy bag and some tracking
This litter is heavy. The 40-pound weight combined with the packaging makes the cat litter extremely hard to lift and pour. There aren’t any handles, so unless you transfer the litter to a more stable container (which we recommend) you’re essentially lugging around a plastic bag the size and weight of a small child. This makes the first use extremely difficult, and anyone with a bad back will want to avoid picking up the bag.

We managed to pour it into the litter box without spilling and noticed that it didn’t kick up any dust, so this was a positive. Though it claims that the granules are heavy and therefore non-tracking, that was not entirely our experience. After a few days, we did have to sweep up some litter mess. It was less than we’ve had to clean after some other litters, but still enough that we wouldn’t call it low tracking.
Price: $20 for 40 pounds
It pays to buy in bulk. At $20 for 40 pounds, Dr. Elsey’s cat litter is extremely well priced. While you could purchase the smaller bag of litter, you’ll save in the long run by going big (if you can handle the weight). Depending on how much you fill your cat box, we think this size bag could handle a single cat household for up to two months.
Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter vs. Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Platinum Cat Litter
If you’re looking into other litters, Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal is a major contender. Like Dr. Elsey’s formula, Arm & Hammer’s litter disguises bad odors as promised. That said, we found that Dr. Elsey’s litter clumped much better than Arm & Hammer’s, resulting in solid chunks that were easier to scoop. Arm & Hammer is our favorite when it comes to tracking, but Dr. Elsey wins the competition hands down when you factor in price. Arm & Hammer’s 27.5-pound box goes for $30, while Dr. Elsey’s 40-pound bag goes for just $20.
Worth it.
Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter kept our home smelling fresh and it made cleaning the litter box an easy chore. And the fact that a 40-pound bag will run you just $20? Well that makes it even better.
